“Spoonie” Box – Hollow Construction

Artist-in-Residence commission by Stanford Medicine X 2014. Based on the “Spoon Theory” for chronic illness written by Christine Miserandino.

  • Copper, brass, nickel, sterling and fine silver. hollow constructed box
  • Measures approx. 7 3/4 inches long by 2 3/4 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches deep. 
  • Hand sawn, etched, riveted and soldered


Based on the “Spoon Theory” this box contains a hidden spoon for emergencies. The false bottom can be lifted out to reveal this spoon.  On the front of the box a version of the theory is etched in nickel.  Medicine X logos flank either side and the lid is hinged with anatomical bone hinges.  On the lid is a family sterling silver spoon from the artist’s great aunt.
